![]() ![]() If you like kayaking, swimming, nature, and the like this is a great place to visit. It is Rural, inexpensive, quiet and Average.Ĭitrus County is home to many attractions such as the Crystal River and Homosassa Springs. The politics are the Good Old Boy network and they have made a hell of a mess of things. For the most part the residents are friendly but do not try to swim in the Homosassa springs as the local residents fight allowing any one walking in off the street. Most of the restaurants use two major food suppliers and do not buy fresh. Peck's in Ozello is worth the trip for the scenery but alas also more frozen food. There are a few nice restaurants, Chef's of Napoli on 41 in Inverness, Cody's on 19 in Crystal River, Enrico's also 41 in Inverness, Red's breakfast and lunch only also on 41 up north near the river. Bucaneer Bay water park is in Weeki Wachi, not this county. Homosassa Wildlife preserve is the only reason I do not rate the County Poor. The Plantation Inn is nice and Holiday Inn Express is okay. ![]() Swimming, snorkeling all nice but do not stay in any of the sea side motels. The Crystal River mall is on the verge of collapse, Kohl's is scheduled to close all that will be left is a Kmart and a movie. the only beach is tiny and just south of a now retired nuclear plant, kind of not swimming friendly. There are some nice restaurants but for the most part it is the usual frozen food chains and local eateries. The droughts over the past several years reduced the lakes to little more than swamps. The County now has more Walmart's than high schools. Other than the hospitals/ medical profession and municipalities there are no major employers. Citrus County is a rural community, has many farms, forests, swampy areas and a relaxed life style. I must admit I had no expectation of liking it as much as I did. Grateful for its varied beauty, relaxed drivers, friendly people, wildlife and proximity to Tampa Bay area. It was only 48 hours but it whet my appetite for a return trip soon and repeatedly. We had great food at Margarita’s at Paradise Road Marina and at Sara’s Diner. Kayaking into springs and seeing manatees below my kayak were delightful. Also want to feel safe when solo cycling the rail trail between rural towns and I think the Withlacoochee will meet that requirement. ![]() The really pretty, altitude 100 foot highlands and peanut farmland and state forest interest me since I’d rather not hike with gators. Devils Den made me and my 20-year-old happy and cool. I’ve lived in Florida for 8 months, having lived in many beauty-filled places, and simply wanted a change of scenery involving refreshing 72 degree water in late summer. ![]()
